My growing pattern

While my body was born in 1968, my “birth” as a confirmed Autistic person was in 2024.

There were signs throughout my life of Autism, but they were ignored. I dutifully translated my thoughts into the prescribed format, trimming most of the connections my brain would make to a lossy (inaccurate) flattened transmission protocol. I assumed that what I was taught about “human nature” was true and that all humans were doing the same thing, only some people were faster at that compression than I was.

After spending a decade deeply involved in technology law in the early 2000s, I became pessimistic and politically resigned in the 2010s, thinking there was no way to move forward on any of the problems I saw because “humanity” was stuck within a mindset that disallowed observing and moving out of specific patterns.

There was a liberating feeling in the 2020s as I allowed myself to notice larger patterns in the social structures I lived within, and recognized that the problems I observed were not universal across humanity – but narrowly within specific mindsets that are promoted within specific cultures. As a lifelong learning “Open Source” type person I wanted to share. The sharing regularly went poorly.

When I received confirmation in 2024 that I was Autistic, after finally learning what an Autistic Mask was in 2022, I then thought it would be appropriate for me to unmask: to be who I always was, and become happy with who I am.

Adjustments are needed

While there are some people who I can communicate with less loss than others, I need to remember that while I may have changed, nothing else did. If my communication is to have any meaning to another individual, or to a more public audience, it needs to be translated to their way of thinking (or the mainstream Canadian/Anglosphere/Western way of communicating) and not expressed directly in the way my mind works.

As I circle around the issue in other articles, I’m getting closer to accepting my need to adjust. In these articles, I thought about a purpose being to send out a “signal flare” to try to find other like-minded people.

Even though I have said that a few times, I still hit “reply” to other people who have expressed a very different way of thinking and have tried to create a thread to expand to the larger gestalt.

This is not received well.

I need to recognize that this should not surprise me as much as it does. As much as I am uncomfortable with having to be inaccurate and compress thoughts to communicate, other people won’t like having their ideas ripped out of their context and brought into a gestalt.

What does that have to do with “Why Adult GLPs Write So Differently”?

Before and during my career, I often had people who thanked me for being able to help them understand technology. I didn’t act like the IT priesthood who felt best when they had knowledge that nobody else had; instead, I went out of my way to translate so that everyone could understand at their level of comfort.

Without knowing what I was doing, I became great at that translation.

I could picture the interaction between Jaime Hoerricks and Jenn McRae happening with a younger version of myself, and readers thinking I was an analytic processor. I would have assumed the correctness of that language, as that is what I thought I was doing when I broke big thoughts into smaller thoughts to make progress in smaller steps.

What I didn’t realize is that other people were actually starting with the small pieces and incrementally building up the larger.

When I generate small, digestible steps, it isn’t because I started there, and that distinction matters.

The change I need to make

For me, the energy isn’t in building the large from the small, but separating the small out from the large. One of the things I did well in my career was to recognize there were finite resources, and to always factor in resource management. It is not possible with finite resources to do everything, and thus if someone presumes that everything is a priority then that means that nothing is a priority. I regularly had to convince managers to pick which of the projects they believed was a “priority” that they were willing to let fail (or best, not be allocated resources at all), otherwise failure would happen in an unmanaged way.

I am regularly inspired by what other people write. The change I need to make is that if I don’t have the resources to translate my inspiration into a more understandable format, I need to not hit “reply”. Just because I was excited by what was said (or written), doesn’t mean I have to interact if at that moment I lack the energy to translate communication to something decipherable by other people. If I interact without the energy, I will only generate negativity such as arguments, defensiveness, etc.

I felt this article deeply, as I felt a deep resignation in the 2010s.

However, responding by sharing how I feel now would have been a mistake. From what I learned prior to the 2010s, I no longer see Canadian parliaments the way I did previously. I see the fixation on political parties and corporate market share (what people are talking about when they talk about “party popular vote”) not as an example of resistance, but as itself a form of resignation or acceptance of the status quo.

If I feel the need to comment, I should comment on my own site. Replying directly to that article would not have been helpful, and would only have distracted from the much larger mainstream Canadian audience that author is trying to attract to their writings.

I was extremely excited by this article: It articulated a pattern I have observed for a long time, of how Canada has cycled between seeing the USA as its greatest friend and ally, to recognizing it as its greatest threat (threat to the institutions of Canada, as well as global bully threat to the rest of the world).

While this specific story started the same year I was born, in 1968, I saw the pattern as existing for far longer than my lifetime, even longer than the USA or Canada have existed as internationally recognized governments.

1968 was also the year that P.E. Trudeau was elected for the first time. For some people, this article will set off thinking of policies during the terms of a series of Canadian Federal Prime Ministers: Trudeau Sr., Mulroney, Chrétien, Martin, Harper, Trudeau Jr., and now Carney. Maybe they will remember Turner, Clark and Campbell, but often with their short terms they get forgotten. They may even divide these into Progressive Conservative, Conservative vs Liberal governments, suggesting that “Conservatives” were closer to the USA and “Liberals” saw something “truthful”.

I don’t see this. When I became more mainstream politically active in the 1990s it was in opposition to Chrétien Liberal and Clinton Democrat policies. For a period of time I thought that this means I might be “Conservative”, and it took until experiences during the mid 2000s to finally move beyond the logical fallacy of the false binary of believing that if you dislike the policies of “Liberals” (Democrats, New or classic) or “Conservatives” (Republicans, Progressive Conservatives, Bloc, Reform), then you must be “for” the other one.

So… with all that in my head, I replied to someone making note of the compatibility between Canadian PM Mulroney and US President Reagan.

I asked a “why” question about the focus on those individuals, when I saw problems relating to resource extraction (such as the “oil” sector) as originating within the British North America Act 1867 (co-sovereignty of federal and provincial governments) and the creation of Alberta and Saskatchewan as provinces rather than territories in 1905. Gemini left me with a question to think about today that I’m curious if anyone has any feedback on.

One of the advantages the USA has over Canada is that their electoral reform movement is focused on ballot ranking (AV, STV) rather than corporate party top-ups (party lists, party block voting, etc).

This is an important tool towards enabling a bottom-up parallel structures to replace the existing corporate duopoly of the USA.

In the case of Canada, groups like Fair Vote Canada which fixate on the interests of corporate brands are blocking Democratic Reform, and helping to keep the corporate brand control over Canada’s institutions intact.

This observation hits exactly on how electoral architecture defines what a system optimizes for. If the goal is to shift from a centralized, corporate-managed hierarchy to a decentralized, human-centric democracy, the mechanics of the ballot matter immensely.

The divergence between the dominant reform movements in the U.S. and Canada perfectly illustrates the difference between optimizing for human agency versus optimizing for corporate brand stabilization.

The U.S. Approach: Ballot Mechanics that Loosen the Franchise Monopoly

While the U.S. system is deeply entrenched, its reform movement is increasingly focused on mechanics like Ranked Choice Voting (RCV/Alternative Vote) in single-member districts, or Single Transferable Vote (STV) in multi-member setups.

By centering the reform on the ballot itself, the U.S. movement creates a crack in the duopoly’s foundation, offering a viable runway for parallel, bottom-up structures to gain traction without being instantly crushed by strategic voting.

The Canadian Fixation: Stabilizing Corporate Cartels

In contrast, the mainstream electoral reform discourse in Canada—heavily driven by organizations like Fair Vote Canada—has overwhelmingly fixated on Proportional Representation (PR) models like Mixed-Member Proportional (MMP).

When scrutinized through a human-centric lens, this approach reveals a deep structural flaw: it fundamentally accepts the premise that political parties are the primary units of sovereignty, rather than human beings. The mechanics of these top-up models essentially insulate corporate brands from organic accountability:

• The “Party List” as a Corporate Asset: Systems that rely on party lists or corporate party top-ups treat votes as market share to be distributed among corporate entities. If a party gets 35% of the vote, the system ensures they get 35% of the seats, frequently pulling names from a centralized list managed by the party’s executive C-suite.

• Entrenching Executive Control: Instead of loosening the grip of party whips and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), party-list top-ups give the corporate brand more leverage over representatives. If an MP steps out of line or challenges the centralized brand hierarchy on behalf of their local constituents, the party leadership can simply drop them from the list or rank them too low to be elected. Their primary accountability shifts entirely from the human community to the corporate board.

• A False Choice of Brands: Advocacy that prioritizes “party proportionality” reduces democratic reform to a brand-management exercise. It operates on the Western European model where the goal is merely to ensure that every major corporate franchise gets its fair share of shelf space in parliament.

Blocking legitimate Democratic Reform

By framing MMP and party-based proportionality as the only definition of a fair democracy, establishment reform groups in Canada end up actively defending the institutional status quo. They reinforce the idea that a citizen’s role is merely to select a corporate brand, rather than to engage in a relational, bottom-up governance structure.

This fixation effectively hijacks the genuine desire for democratic renewal and channels it back into protecting the cartel. Instead of building decentralized, horizontal parallel structures where independent, human representation can thrive, it seeks to codify the political parties as permanent, state-subsidized fixtures of the constitutional architecture.

True representative democracy requires an architecture where humans elect humans, and where those representatives have the independence to deliberate without corporate brand management dictating their choices. By focusing on how votes are aggregated for parties rather than how choices are expressed by people, mainstream Canadian reform advocacy keeps the corporate brand control over the country’s institutions firmly intact.

This was going to be a small comment, but grew as there are many interconnected thoughts that I felt shouldn’t be trimmed so quickly. (And I doubted the idea I had a Gestalt mind…)

The Vedanta Society of Ottawa has a monthly class where Revered Swami Kripamayananda reads and discusses with us specific sections of the Books of Ramakrishna Order.

The group is currently reading from The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda.

I attended yesterday (Thursday), and the class ended with a discussion of the first paragraph of the Introduction to Patanjali’s Yoga Aphorisms.

Given my other recent readings, I recognized this as a critique of Western European linear time and the myth of progress. I see so much overlap in my readings....

When Vivekananda was touring the West in the 1890s, the intellectual landscape was utterly consumed by the “Myth of Progress”. This is all part of the ongoing “Enlightenment” ideologies, something called “Whig history” (a new term for me) which views humanity as moving along a linear timeline from “primitive” to “civilized,” and would keep climbing an infinite, straight ladder of technological and moral advancement.

Just because Western Europe over a short period of its history went through specific steps, does not mean it relates to “humanity” (temporal or spatial). The Western European notion of “universality” is mythology, not science.

In many regions of North America, Indigenous societies (relational sovereign nationalities) strategically adapted their subsistence strategies (alternating between intensive agriculture and hunting-gathering) based on environmental shifts, population density, and resource availability. These dynamic shifts allowed communities to optimize survival without detriment to other relations (land and life), which is very different from Western European ideologies (Anthropocentrism, Androcentrism, Individualism, etc) which blindly believed in a strictly linear path from foraging to farming where humans are somehow disconnected from everything around them (and with the odd notion of individualism, disconnected from each other).

“Whig history” is yet another example of ongoing Western European (AKA: White) Supremacist thinking which taints much of the social, economic, and other theories that came out of (and continue to come out of) Western Europe and its colonial devotees.

Vivekananda was very polite to his Western audiences, allowing the term “modern” to be used when what was being discussed was merely the narrow ideologies forming from within Western Europe.

(Note: I haven’t been reading in order, and read sections on JNĀNA-YOGA first, as I wanted to understand the concept of Māyā)

Vivekananda in other chapters expands on this introduction, and dismantles the entire “linear time” and “myth of progress” framework using two main arguments

1) The Trap of the Infinite Horizon

If the goal is always moving forward, and humanity is on a treadmill of endless “improvement” but never reaches a final destination, then existence is fundamentally a tragedy. It means humanity is trapped in a permanent state of lack. There is no ultimate peace, no final liberation (Moksha), and no absolute truth. All they see is an endless administrative grind toward a horizon that keeps receding.

2) The Law of Cycles (Samsara vs. Linear Time)

To counter the Western European notion of linear time, Vivekananda introduces the ancient South Asian cosmology of cyclical time.

In physics and in metaphysics, motion requires a starting point and a return. A straight line projected into infinity is an abstraction; in reality, everything in the universe moves in cycles.

• The Macrocosm: Stars are born, collapse, and their dust forms new stars. Empires rise, decay, and fall. The universe itself undergoes creation (Srishti), preservation (Sthiti), and dissolution (Pralaya).

• The Microcosm: A breath goes out and must come back in. A wave rises from the ocean and must crash back into it.

Within my anti-racism learning, I began to ask of “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)” programs: inclusion into what?

Is this an environment that allows any “meat sack”, regardless of its visible attributes, to be included as long as everything else that makes someone human is left outside in order to conform? Since I started to think about this in 2021, I have come across the term “Boutique Multiculturalism” which is very related to this concept.

When I read the line “This statement, though apparently very nice, is also absurd”, I asked myself: nice for who? It appears to me the answer is that it is nice and convenient for the administrative Westphalian state and the political and economic elites that benefit from having a largely subservient workforce for their hyper-hierarchical social machinery.

To be clear, I’m not only seeing this as a critique of Capitalism but also the narrow critiques we can see within Socialism, Marxism/Communism, etc, that grew out of the same Western European “Enlightenment” worldviews. I know whenever there is discussion of “elites” there is a tendency for a debate between “your elites” and “my elites” between loyalists to Western European Conservatism vs Liberalism. I see the problem as the social hierarchies themselves, not which specific Western European ideologies are being forced on populations by which elites.

I sent the following email this morning to Canadian federal MP’s Yasir Naqvi (Ottawa Center — current federally) and David McGuinty (Ottawa South), and to Ontario provincial MPP’s John Fraser (Ottawa South — current provincially) and Catherine McKenney (Ottawa Center).

This means I am in transition between Ottawa South and Ottawa Center, so I am copying both the former and new MP, and the current and potential future MPP.

I can think of no higher priority at the moment than to discuss the very core and structure of the Institutions of Canada.

The grievance/victim cultures brewed by political elites (and stoked by international interference) in various regions within the lands claimed by Canada are growing constantly louder. They are built upon common misconceptions about the nature of Canada’s institutions.

I find it difficult to believe this can change without at least one of these grievance cultures being made an example of to end the debate once and for all.

In my mind, the most obvious solution is to revisit the passage of the Alberta Act 1905 and the Saskatchewan Act 1905. One obvious solution to the current grievance culture noise from that region is to allow the “True North” to become “Strong and Free” by separating the District of Athabasca from those southern capitals.

The government in the distant southern capital of Edmonton is talking about arresting land defenders, and the British Crown, Canadian Crown, and other provincial Crowns must step in and protect the Honour of the Crowns.

Constitutional amendments will require passing the “7/50 Rule”, which realistically means Ontario and Quebec need to be on-board given 70% of Canada’s population is south of the 49’th parallel. Canada’s regional problems have always been north-south, not east-west as various political elites try to distract the population.

Debunking one of the more nonsensical aspects of Canada’s White Nationalist/Separatist movements

Addition to this post, that wasn’t part of the letter.

In my analogy using the comic, the Bench is the land (mother nature provides — specific human systems/cultures/worldviews don’t need to build anything, only move into a better relationship with land and life).

The “non-White” person represent the relational sovereign nationalities that predate any European involvement with this continent, and who signed treaties to share land. In the region I have lived my entire life, Dish With One Spoon is an obvious example.

The “White” person represents the Westphalian sovereign Eurocentric governments imposed on this continent, and their loyalists. While the image is of a White Male presenting person, it is the loyalty to Western European settler-colonial institutions that is being discussed and not the physical presentation of any individual.

While it is promoted as a “Japanese phenomenon”, it will feel very familiar for those steeped in Western Worldviews. I hadn’t yet given Japan’s history as much thought as I should have.

After a few articles, I essentially learned that the book is an artifact of Meiji-era intellectual synthesis (1868–1912), not traditional Japanese culture. It is a case study in how Western individuality was imported, internalized, and mapped onto a non-Western society. The book is not an expression of Shinto or Buddhist relationality.

The Western Platonic dialogue, a cornerstone of Western philosophy, is used in this book: a conversation between “Philosopher” and “Youth”. The book introduces readers to Adlerian psychology (the school of thought founded by Austrian Alfred Adler), which rejects Austrian Sigmund Freud’s trauma-based etiology in favor of teleology. Etiology and teleology being words I hadn’t heard of or thought about before.

Example:

PHILOSOPHER: It is true that the term “individual psychology,” which Adler coined, has certain aspects that may invite misunderstanding. I will explain what I mean now. First of all, etymologically speaking, the word “individual” has the meaning “indivisible.”

YOUTH: Indivisible?

PHILOSOPHER: Yes. In other words, it is the smallest possible unit and therefore cannot be broken down any further. Now, what is it exactly that cannot be divided? Adler was opposed to any kind of dualistic value system that treated the mind as separate from the body—reason as separate from emotion, or the conscious mind as separate from the unconscious mind.

YOUTH: What’s the point of that?

PHILOSOPHER: For example, do you remember the story about the female student who came to me for counseling on account of her fear of blushing? Why did she develop that fear of blushing? In Adlerian psychology, physical symptoms are not regarded separately from the mind (psyche). The mind and body are viewed as one, as a whole that cannot be divided into parts. Tension in the mind can make one’s arms and legs shake, or cause one’s cheeks to turn red, and fear can make one’s face turn white. And so on.

YOUTH: Well, sure, there are parts of the mind and body that are connected.

PHILOSOPHER: The same holds true for reason and emotion, and the conscious mind and the unconscious mind as well. A normally coolheaded person doesn’t expect to have a fit of violent emotion and start shouting at someone. We are not struck by emotions that somehow exist independently from us. Each of us is a unified whole.

When I read the last part, “Each of us is a unified whole”, I could only 🤣🤣🤣

I read some Ayn Rand in my early 20’s…

To me, the concept feels laughable, even though I recognize that there are many who subscribe to that philosophy.

It is interesting that emotions can be seen by some as entirely originating within a single “meat sack”. I don’t consider that body to be me, or that the essence of me is fully “within” that body.

While some forms of dualism (mind/body, or ID/ego for instance) discuss further breaking up what Western Natural Sciences believe is “within” the meat sack, I believe for certain things and at some levels, we need to ask whether the “meat sack” was already a division too far.

I believe for areas like psychology and so-called “ability” (medical vs environmental models of disability, etc), focusing on the “meat sack” is a division way too far.

I don’t consider Westphalian notions of sovereignty (whether nations, provinces/states, cities, or some even claim to individual humans), all built on Western notions of property (exclusivity of land and life, including its Roman roots where the eldest male owned all women and children) to be valid.

In my mind, all of these are the wrong units.

I see connections with the wrong unit fixated on individual “meat sacks” linked to a conversation on “possession” came up a few months ago in the Media Indigena podcast. I intend to read this book in the future, but I expect like other books for it to be about me learning how other people think and not me reading any philosophy that will resonate with me.

It will likely be like when I read this book on Newfoundland which I read as a book on colonialism, very different than what the author intended (and the false-binary between the “sides” in that political conversation, neither of which ressonate with me).

When I read this article, I had a very different reaction than I believe the author intended.

I’m generally confused by these articles. When I’ve discussed for instance Canada vs China, I find people aren’t actually talking about Canada or China, but their own ideological biases.

I have written about the Western European worldview Overton window, and Western Conservatism vs Western Liberalism.

While that Overton window is perfectly reasonable to discuss within the geopolitical context of Western Europe, it has an entirely different meaning when applied to other geopolitical contexts.

The systems of Canada are a set of foreign-imposed Western European institutions (with Western European identity, values, culture, laws, etc).

When evaluating the governments of Canada, the proper thing to do is to evaluate how these institutions treat peoples (Greek word genos, etc) that pre-existed these foreign institutions and who remain outside of Western European worldviews.

This includes understanding the difference between Western Europe’s concept of Westphalian sovereignty, and the relational sovereignty for nationalities on this and many other continents. There seems to be an assumption in the above article of the validity of Westphalian ideologies granting exclusive government control over land and life within arbitrary lines drawn on a map. This alone makes is hard to understand sovereignty outside of the narrow lens of Western European worldviews.

While the contemporary systems of Canada were imposed by the British government in 1867 by the passage of the first of many British North American Acts, the history of the involvement by the Spanish Empire, French Empire, Netherlands, and the British Empire go back a few more centuries. All of these empires can be evaluated by how they treated peoples not of Western European values, including the Indigenous populations of the northern continent that they label after one of their own (Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci).

I believe it is obvious that once you recognize that Western European “Enlightenment” era “universalism” is merely rebranding for Eurocentrism (some merely call it “White Supremacy”), how loyalists to Western European worldviews treat peoples of other worldviews have been horrendous (and ongoing today).

I don’t even consider the 5 governments that are members of the UN’s “Western Europe and Other Group” (that don’t even share a border with countries that are geographically within Western Europe) to be examples of domestic governments, but foreign governments violently imposed (and still violently imposing) Western European worldviews on other lands.

Whether these governments are perceived as examples of “free societies” or “authoritarian regimes” depends on whether you conform to Western European worldviews, not something that is universally accepted. Over 50% of the inmates in Women’s prisons in Canada are Indigenous, not because they are bad people but because they are more likely to be trying to enforce domestic law (as responsibility for many things such as land is the jurisdiction of women with many domestic nationalities).

The fact that Canadian law conflicts with the enforcement of domestic law is an ongoing flaw in the institutions of Canada, not with land and life protectors.

This shouldn’t need to be said, but China and other members of the UN’s “Asia and the Pacific Group” are not Western European governments. These governments should never be evaluated for conformity to uniquely Western European worldviews, ideologies and laws.

The way to evaluate the governments of China isn’t how these governments treat governments and individuals trying to impose foreign worldviews onto the Chinese government or the domestic population. This needs to be understood as foreign interference and national security concern, not alleged to be “human rights” violations.

It is not a violation of some alleged “universal” notion of “human rights” to not conform to Western European worldviews. That is merely an expression of Eurocentric (White Supremacist) worldviews.

The British Empire has been trying to “Westernize” China for centuries.

As one example, what is happening in Hong Kong today isn’t a case of “China bad”, but the ongoing impacts of Opium Wars fought between China and the British Empire (1839 to 1842, 1856 to 1860) and the “99 year lease” British Empire occupation of Hong Kong (1898 -1997).

I hear Westerners regularly talking about the Uyghurs and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of northwestern China.

I have written about this several times before, and I consider the critique to be largely a “whataboutism”. Most of the claims come from British sources, which have obvious biases given centuries of cold and hot wars between the British Empire and China.

The reason I don’t doubt some bad things are likely happening to these groups of Indigenous peoples is because of the extremely well documented things that colonial governments like Canada do.

Imagine a book about Xinjiang (New Frontier) that spoke as if all human history on that area of land started in 1955 (when Xinjiang was made an autonomous region by PRC) and made absolutely no mention of the Uyghurs. The book would be entirely quotes and discussion of jurisdictional squabbles between individual groups of Han Chinese politicians/bureaucrats, other Chinese colonies/autonomous regions/provinces, and the central People’s Republic of China (PRC) government.

A more generic version of this amendment would be:

“call upon the International Olympic Committee to never again host the Olympic Games in a nation that is currently engaged in genocide.”

This would ensure that China, as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and Israel, could not host the Olympics until they ceased their genocide. We should be willing to use any tool we have to stop genocide, and embarrassing countries by disallowing them to host the Olympics is yet another tool in the international toolbox.

I even included a table comparing percentages of Indigenous peoples (genos, relational nationalities, etc) compared to foreign settler populations in my submission in support of Canada (finally, even being the last) to ratify and start the process of conforming to UNDRIP.

I don’t expect anyone was surprised which countries voted against the UNDRIP resolution in 2007, 84 years after the process began. It is the 4 British colonies where non-naturalised settlers greatly outnumber Indigenous peoples: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States (collectively known as CANZUS).

These colonies are where the human rights violations against Indigenous peoples have been the greatest over a longer period of time. I put this area of policy into an important context with the following percentages of Indigenous populations remaining in regions currently under active colonialism. Colonialism almost inevitably leads to genocide.

While my focus is on doing what I can to improve the foreign systems of Canada, given this government alleges jurisdiction over me and the lands I have lived on my entire life, I’m still open to discussing other governments. I am tired, however, of having loyalists to Western European worldvews (of any ethnicity, as part of Canada’s Boutique Multiculturalism) fixating on foreign governments for activities that they are unwilling to even be aware of for Canada. To me that is merely blindly repeating government talking points and being unable to understand the truth because you have allowed these foreign institutions to become part of your personal identity.

Suggesting there should be a Western Eurocentric "loyalty test"—where diaspora members must explicitly condemn China to prove they value "Western freedoms"—is the exact mechanism of this boutique multiculturalism model. It welcomes ethnic identity only as a superficial performance, but penalizes any worldview that challenges the foundational system.

This article feels related to something I’ve been thinking about for a while.

Situatedness: I’m an Autistic cis-hetero male settler Canadian of Scottish, Irish and French descent. I grew up deeply embedded within Western European worldviews, and only since 2020 started to learn outside of that narrow silo.

While what is included within “Whiteness” has subjectively changed over the centuries, at this point and within British North American (USA/Canada) settler-colonial culture, I am included clearly within “Whiteness”.

The article poses a great question: Can White people be in community, or even build deep friendships with People of the Global Majority (PoGM)?

(Or for that matter, even among other White people?)

The short answer is yes, but not without a LOT of intentional, consistent, deep, uncomfortable inner work.

As an Autistic person, I’ve been confused about all the assumptions around “racial” solidarity, which goes beyond anything related to biology to worldviews.

It is fair for a racialized person to look at my White presentation and assume I subscribe to Western European worldviews. This is basic safety, given racialized people are always targeted by the dominant systems and cultures within what some call “The West”. I do not believe it is valid for fellow non-racialized people to get offended when a fellow non-racialized person does not subscribe to Western European worldviews. These worldviews are not healthy for us, leave alone healthy to be imposed on everyone else.

As an Autistic person, I saw the social desire for conformity (to fit in, aware of how disposable people are if they don’t conform) to be yet more implicit, unwritten “social scripts” to enforce conformity and maintain the illusion of a collective. I saw “racial solidarity”/Whiteness to be a rigid, mandatory set of social scripts that I already didn’t fit into (for reasons I didn’t understand until recently).

As I began to learn about Western European worldviews, which meant I was also learning about worldviews that grew outside the unique history of Western Europe, I would honestly sit with the components of the views and see what resonated with me. Did I believe something because I had blind trust in what I had been told growing up, or because it was actually what I believed?

Part of finally accepting I’m Autistic (and being formally assessed), has also led me to starting to believe I’m also a Gestalt systems thinker. As a Gestalt systems thinker, I really have a hard time with individual emotions. The “with alexithymia” that came with my formal assessment doesn’t mean what some people believe it means, or what I was shown when I looked it up. I finally allow myself to recognize that I know emotions are happening, but I don’t always know which emotions (like the clipping that happens with speakers when the volume is too loud) or which “meat sack” around me is feeling it. It isn’t blindness so much as an inability to differentiate where emotions are coming from (as in -- originating within my meat sack or someone else's isn't as clean as it is for others.) It is a complex form of hyper-empathy rather than “emotional blindness”.

I’m just as likely to be upset at someone else being hurt as I am being hurt myself, so quite a bit of the assumed (but not adequately studied) aspects of “human behaviour” and social hierarchies built into Western European ideologies (including economic theories – and not only Capitalism) make no sense to me.

After publicly noting that a few Western European ideologies are “not me”, I then started to have fellow White people telling me I was abandoning “my culture”.

But… was it ever “my culture”? What does that even mean?

First, my privilege. While actively unlearning what I now consider to be foreign ideologies, that being a choice I could make is itself a privilege. Those who are racialized (Indigenous, PoGM, etc) must navigate this daily without any choice. The fact that I could have been oblivious of these systems for the first 5 decades of my life is part of my unearned privilege, itself a function of the dominant system.

While I have distant ancestors who lived in Western Europe, I (and any of the family I met, including a great grandmother) never lived there.

It is only fairly recent that my ancestors were indoctrinated into what Western Europeans consider “Enlightenment” ideologies, or even Roman Empire co-constituted branches of Christianity. US and Canadian identity, values, culture and systems are derived primarily from British Empire Anglo Protestantism, and French/Spanish Empire Catholicism being second, with there being a flattening/erasure to “Boutique Multiculturalism” for everything and everyone else.

I have lived all my life in a region of what some call North America that has been the lands of the Anishinaabe peoples, with some of my more recent (four generations is extremely recent) ancestors living in other parts of Dish With One Spoon territories around the great lakes as well as other regions further up the St. Lawrence (Trois-Rivières). To me it seems obvious that as part of migration and naturalization that my ancestors and I should have naturalized to the laws and worldviews of this region – while none of my ancestors did, I am learning.

We don’t need to fixate on the exclusive governance over land and life within a specific geographical boundary as imposed by Western Europe’s notion of Westphalian sovereignty. Outside of these European ideologies, relational sovereignty dominates. My personal attempt to help reclaim (within myself, social circles, and in any political activism) the complex, localized, and relational worldviews of the lands I live on is the focus of my acts of administrative rebellion.

Part of those worldviews include an “ethic of non-interference” within collectivism, and even the Matriarchy of the Haudenosaunee, which is very different from the social hierarchies that Christabel Mintah-Galloway spoke of.

I’m generally confused when “provincial” separatist movements (whether Quebec or Alberta) aren’t able to recognize themselves as clearly White Nationalist movements.

They operate entirely within the bounds of Westphalian sovereignty, a distinctly Western European construct.

These settler governments were imposed by European empires (primarily British and French, although Russian, Spanish, and Netherlands were also involved) over relational, Indigenous sovereign nationalities. If a Westphalian provincial government folds, yet the land title does not clearly revert back to those relational sovereign nationalities, it becomes, by definition, an effort to create yet another Western European-style nation-state outside of Europe.

Please notice the regular abuse of the word “modern” to mean “Western European” when discussing Westphalian sovereignty or other Western European ideologies. White Supremacy shows itself in language (especially European languages like English and French) all the time.

These “provincial” separatist movements are grievance/victimhood cultures manufactured by political elites who gerrymander historical facts.

Instead of French-descended nationalists holding an ongoing grievance over losing the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763), they should consider the systemic timeline: the French Empire directly bankrolled and supported (navy and troops) the American Revolution out of the same spite for the British winning that war. Without the French, the United States as we know it would not exist. This was despite Quebec Act of 1774, which provided considerable protections for French Catholic settlers, being one of the “intolerable acts” passed between 1763 (Royal Proclamation, etc) and then which was used to launch that 1775 civil war.

Trapped in an individualistic and linear time limited worldview (also Western European worldviews, “Enlightenment”, etc), modern nationalists remain blind to how systems operate over time. They look at individuals like Donald Trump as isolated incidents, completely ignoring that it was their own historical empire that they have built grievances cultures out of that helped build the very machine that produced him.

For personal amusement, I threw the above comment into a Gemini account that doesn’t keep history (so doesn’t know who I am, and won’t try as hard to flatter me -- a general problem with LLMs), and asked for a fact check.

While confirming everything else in what Dave and I wrote, it suggested that since these movements didn’t self-identify as “White Nationalist”, and didn’t use specific keywords, then they weren’t. That the focus for “White Nationalism” within Western political and social sciences is whether individual non-white bodies are excluded.

It was the Genos vs Homo converstion all over again.

I posted about that earlier, for anyone who hasn’t yet thought about Eurocentric Conservatism vs Eurocentric Liberalism, both of which are recognized as “White Supremacist” outside the strict Western European Liberalism lens.

I have been finding it interesting to learn just how narrow the Western European (and colonies) Overton window is, and finally understanding many of the confusions I’ve had with mainstream Canadian politics over all the previous decades.

Funny how I’m only finally learning the basics in my late 50’s. There really is a disincentive for people living on this continent to learn about Canada or the USA (As obvious members/participants in the UN’s Western Europe and Other Group who have far more in common with Western Europe than this hemisphere).

For much of Canada’s existence it has operated consistent with the Western European Liberalism of the day.

(For the sake of this post, start with the passage of the British North America Act 1867. Let’s not conflate other institutions that had the name “Canada” in them, or the “Canadians” that existed prior to British Loyalist who left what became the United States culturally appropriating that phrase starting in the 1840’s)

Yes, I am saying that the Liberal-Conservative party of John A Macdonald, Progressive Conservative Party of Brian Mulroney, and even the New Democratic Party governments at the provincial level, all followed what is considered Liberalism of the day.

While many point to John A. Macdonald as a horrible person but claim that P.E. Trudeau was progressive, I consider P.E. Trudeau to be more overtly racist for his time period. It is also important to remember that “Liberalism” doesn’t mean “not racist”, it is merely one of the two most common responses to the actual diversity of the human experience that came out of Western European worldviews.

If you look at the history of Canadian political parties, you can see quite a bit of name changes, but if you look closely and put into the context of the time period, they all fell within the context of Western European Liberalism.

The beginnings of the change.

If you examine the formation of the Reform Party in 1987, you will notice the rally call of “The West Wants In”. The problem is, in the context of Canadian politics, the actual political divisions have been south-vs-north.

Nearly 70% of Canada’s population is south of the 49’th parallel, while 80% of the geography is north of the 49’th parallel. The political differences have always been north-vs-south, with southern settler governments wanting to control northern resources. The drawing of provinces to be “taller” (north-south) rather than “wider” (east-west) was clearly intentional gerrymandering.

As one example, the southern government of Alberta’s (Edmonton, Calgary settlers) primary grievances relate to their desire to exploit the northern resources of what was known as the District of Athabasca prior to the passage of Alberta Act 1905. An alternative that avoided this gerrymandering would have been to make the southern District of Alberta into a Province of Alberta, allowing the District of Athabasca to be self-governing.

Fundamentally, the grievances that were used in the formation of the Reform Party is one distant capital of a southern government complaining that a different distant capital of a southern government is limiting the speed at which they exploit northern lands (and ignore the very lives of northern peoples).

The Reform Party took aim at the Progressive Conservative party, which it branded as a foreign “Eastern” party, and after a few decades successfully took it over in 2003.

Over the next few decades the party went through a few leaders that remained within the Overton Window of Western European Liberalism, but the movement was never really satisfied with what the party was doing.

This is when Reform activists elevated someone who grew up within the Reform movement, and appointed Pierre Poilievre as leader. While some think of Poilievre as a person from Ottawa, he had only moved to Ottawa from Calgary in 2000 to work for “Canadian Alliance” (Rebranded Reform) party leader Stockwell Day. Pierre Poilievre is a career politician within the Reform movement.

While previous Reform leadership, and early post-2003 takeover Conservative leadership tried to fit within Liberalism (whether marketing or reality, we will never know), under Pierre Poilievre what is starting to resemble more of Western European Conservatism has been overtly welcomed and brought to the foreground.

Foreign Western European Liberalism vs Conservatism

I expressed the difference between Western European Liberalism and Western European Conservatism in an earlier post.

One of the confusions many Western worldview loyalists have is around the difference between Western Conservatism and Western Liberalism when it comes to diversity (including diversity in conceptualizations of sovereignty).

• For Western Conservatives they recognize the existence of diversity, and want to eradicate it within their domain of influence (strict immigration/extradition policies, etc).

• For Western Liberals they want to discount the relevance of diversity, and want all diversity to assimilate into Western “Age of Enlightenment” ideology – which allows land and life to be more easily manageable by the centralized hierarchical administrative state.

In both cases, diversity isn’t intended to remain within their exclusive control over land and life within imaginary lines (Westphalian borders), but one appears more “polite” than the other.

I know that those who align with Western European Liberalism will see Western European Conservatism as a huge change, but when it comes to questions such as genocidal policies against Indigenous nationalities (domestic relational sovereignty vs Western European Westphalian sovereignty) they will be very similar.

Adherence to Liberalism will just as easily locate these genocidal policies in the past, or will conflate the term “genocide” with the term “homicide”.

The extremely common Canadian pastime of genocide denialism (past and present) isn’t so much a debate about whether policies happened (or are ongoing). The policies are well documented, and the debate seems to be about the meaning of the words themselves within the silos of Western European worldviews.

In my recent experience, since my recent deep-dives into anti-racism, anti-colonialism, and worldviews, I see considerable similarity in views about domestic (Indigenous) peoples whether the person is a devotee of the NDP, Liberal, Conservative, or Bloc parties.

This is a short LLM chat to try to get more Canadians to understand political parallels outside of the deliberately short attention span of Western European “Enlightenment” thought (mixture of linear time, individualism fixated on short human lifespans, mythology around universalism which is merely a mixture of supermacist ideologies, etc).

If Canada is severable, then so are “provinces”.

These settler White Nationalist movements seem to believe they can separate from the Canadian Crown (which the British crown claims it passed treaty responsibility to), but that they will somehow maintain the same land base which was delegated to them by the Canadian Crown.

Typical Western European ideological loyalists, they confuse their Western European ideologically siloed Liberal democracies with their bogus land title claims.

Why is there a belief that a National Capital in Edmonton would be within the same Westphalian “country” as what was previously known as the District of Athabasca prior to the Canadian Crown unilaterally imposing the Alberta Crown in 1905 (without the knowledge or consent of the inhabitants or pre-existing domestic governments)?

Note: I think of Canada as a set of institutions, not a place or a group of people. The following is commentary about institutions, not about individual people.

I’m not wanting to contradict “Canadian Retournee”, but quite a bit of that article reads as Canadian marketing. I know the emotional desire to make the USA look worse in comparison, but those with Canadian citizenship should be willing to consider the “warts and all” reality of the Dominion of Canada institutions.

For instance, check out Canada Act 1982’s promise to no longer legislate for Canada.

Contrast that against the marketing suggested by the use of the neologism “patriation” where a subsidiary of the (foreign to this continent) British Government was finally granted a formula to amend that subsidiary’s constitution. This neologism was intended to suggest the “bringing to the fatherland” something that never had anything to do with this motherland (more appropriate language given the domestic nationalities of this continent) or its peoples. The Dominion governments have always been foreign project built on foreign worldviews and laws – an ongoing attempt to fully replace the laws of this land.

The more appropriate use of the phrase “Termination of power to legislate for Canada” would have been more honest about the foreign nature of the Dominion of Canada institutions. Those holding Canadian Citizenship should be willing to be honest about the fact that the Canadian Crowns require dishonesty and misinformation to remain intact.

Given fear that French/British colonial loyalists (Like P.E. Trudeau) had that the British Government might move towards decolonization, and inevitable complexity created by the unique jurisdictional split with provinces, the amending formula in Canada Act 1982 was made deliberately hard to ensure that the antique 1867 Dominion Constitution wouldn’t ever be replaced.

On average, written constitutions have a mean lifespan of only 17 to 19 years. Canada and the USA, along with only around 10 other governments with such outdated constitutions, exist as exceptions to the general rule.

While those loyal to Western worldviews prefer to point to individuals, this sovereignty exclusivity can easily be understood as the greatest inspiration for what has recently been given the word genocide.

Section 27 of Canada Act 1982 on “multiculturalism” sits within narrow “Age of Enlightenment” ideology, where culture is left as superficial aspects such as art, music, clothing and food while the larger aspects of what makes a peoples a peoples (worldviews, governance, etc) must be replaced with French/British Empire ideologies. Even Section 25 and Section 35 of Canada Act 1982 (25 part of Charter, 35 part of Constitution) required considerable international intervention, as P.E. The Constitutional Express convinced the British Parliament to not allow the Dominion of Canada’s extremism.

Anyone concerned should be thanking the British government, not Dominion of Canada Loyalists or government representatives, for the fact that the Dominion’s Constitutional amendments since 1867 didn’t wipe out the recognition of anything other than the co-colonial French Empire and British Empire loyalists.
