Westphalian sovereignty

Westphalian sovereignty is yet another term where the word “modern” is abused as a substitute for “Western European”. In conversations I have noted some people somehow believe it only has to do with religion, and there is some debate around if the phrase is accurate given the Peace of Westphalia introduced different concepts.

Unfortunately, the English language regularly fails to clearly describe anything which the Anglosphere is intended to take as “natural” or axioms, rather than concepts to actively debate.

• Under the Westphalian system (Westphalian sovereignty), exclusivity is granted to a state (government institutions) over all land and life within a boundary drawn on a map.

• Under other conceptualizations of sovereignty, such as “Genos-based” or relational sovereignty, land is non-exclusive and governed under living treaties between nationalities where sovereignty is based on a peoples (Genos/etc).

While it is possible for both to coexist (as is being experimented with in Greenland), under Western European individualism and universalism, any other unit that isn’t the individual or the species are ignored or outright rejected (such as Genos/peoples). This has inevitably led to ongoing conflicts.

I apparently perceive time differently than those who fully embrace Western European linear time. I don’t believe the “age of colonialism” ever ended because the occupations by foreign Westphalian governments never ended.

As someone who was Assigned Canadian At Birth, my concern with the whole “51st state” rhetoric from the USA isn’t that I want to protect the Westphalian institutions of Canada, but that I want to protect the interests of the Relational Sovereign nationalities that have non-exclusive intrinsic rights to the lands which the foreign Westphalian institutions of Canada and the United States keep wanting to make Eurocentric Westphalian exclusive claims to.

In my mind, Westphalian exclusivity over land and life within a boundary drawn on a map itself is an extremely serious problem, as it most often leads to only one Genos/people having self-determination and all other peoples being oppressed.

Is Westphalian self-determination an oxymoron?

In case it wasn’t obvious where Westphalian exclusivity linked in with Lockean “free real estate”, it is in a contradiction I regularly see which loyalists to Western worldviews regularly don’t.

You will hear groups talking about their “right to self determination”. When we are talking about Genos/peoples style groups, and relational sovereignty, I am fully supportive of those groups and their right to self-determination.

However, Westphalian sovereignty is an exclusivity over land and life, and when combined with other Western worldviews has largely become a mechanism to deny self-determination to all groups but one (some alleged “majority” at a atomized hyper-individualized sense, even when that majority is formed and maintained via violent uncivilized means).

This conflict has been ongoing since the alleged “Age of Discovery”, but there are 5 examples where the active, ongoing and violent Westphalian denials of self-determination are the most visible.

• United States: July 4, 1776 Declaration of Independence from the “rule of law” (Sovereign Citizens style) as British colonies

• Canada: July 1, 1867 Creation of the Dominion of Canada via the British North America Act 1867 as part of the British Empire, with colonial expansion continuing into other territories. Canada has no “history” of colonialism as it is ongoing

• Australia: January 1, 1901 Federation of the colonies into the Commonwealth of Australia within the British Empire

• New Zealand: September 26, 1907 Proclamation of Dominion status within the British Empire.

• Israel: May 14, 1948 Declaration of Independence following the expiration of the British Mandate for Palestine in line with the Balfour Declaration (2 November 1917) supporting the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine

In all these examples, there were pre-existing nations that weren’t configured as Westphalian governments the way that Europeans recognized, and thus Eurocentric Westphalian institutions were imposed and violently maintained. While these are the dates of the establishment of contemporary Westphalian institutions, the violent denial of the self-determination of pre-existing peoples inhabiting the regions later drawn on a map started much earlier.

I don’t believe that we will be able to solve the underlying conflicts between peoples, or stop ongoing land grabs, without dealing with the notion of Westphalian exclusivity over land and life.

Oh, no – you mentioned Israel?

I have been trying to write an article about the resolution passed by the Green Party of England and Wales titled “Zionism is Racism” (Wikipedia, Greens4Palestine booklet and motion, Green Party Autumn Conference 2006 - Final Agenda)

No matter how many rewrites, I couldn’t get comfortable – so I will only mention it here.

In the 1990s and early 2000s I was involved in the Green Party of Ontario and Canada, and my general attitude was to encourage the party to not talk about this issue as it regularly gets it wrong and only harms the party. In the early 2000s the Ontario and Federal parties engaged in the Streisand effect before Streisand herself did, actively promoting someone named David Icke (claiming to be protesting against him). It only drew more and more Green Party members to Icke talks.

My understanding of what is happening both on this continent as well as Western Asia is much more advanced a decade ago. I have written about how I see the colonialism of Palestine to be primarily an Anglo Protestant project since the 1600s, with the rebranding of the movement to claim to be about “Jewish self-determination” being extremely recent.

I have serious concerns with these conversations in mainstream Western political discussions as well as within the Green Parties.

The most violent tool used against Ashkenazi Jews by European Christians was European Christian Westphalian sovereignty which was denying the self-determination of this subgroup of Jewish peoples (plural, meaning there is more than one ethnoreligious Genos when discussing Jewish peoples). These are all relational sovereign peoples, descending from the twelve tribes that according to their origin story grew from the twelve sons of Jacob (later named Israel).

Given I believe the primary source of the problems facing Jewish and other relational sovereign peoples has been Westphalian exclusivity over land and life, I of course reject the notion that yet another Westphalian institution can solve that problem. I emotionally understand why some Jewish individuals have decided that they need to “fight fire with fire” and try to use Westphalian induced violence to protect against Westphalian induced violence, but this has only made all Jewish peoples less safe.

What has become frighteningly obvious to me is that few of those talking about the Westphalian project of Israel are talking about Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States (collectively known as CANZUS) as settler-colonial Westphalian projects that exist as ongoing expressions of the denial of the self-determination of pre-existing peoples (relational nationalities, etc).

Pretty much everything I see being suggested around accountability for the Westphalian institution of Israel should be applied to CANZUS as well. This includes the recognition that all 5 of these projects are inherently built on racism (a system, not about individual prejudices or individualism at all), calls for the use of BDS policies to stop subjugation and the denial of self-determination of other peoples, and so-on.

This is especially important for a British party, given all 5 of the most violent and obvious expressions of Westphalian settler-colonialism are all the ongoing impacts of the British Empire and its ideologies.

For clarity, as some people assume that all replies are debates, I am not disagreeing with what the author is saying. I’m trying to expand on it and asking questions (not only of the author, but anyone who feels they want to contribute.)

The Unique Origins of these Stories

The economic systems that came out of Europe (Capitalism, Socialism, Marxism, etc) are all built on similar ideologies around Anthropocentrism (and Anthropocentric concepts of property), Androcentrism (why extraction is considered asset/growth, while healthcare and education are considered expenses), individualism, universalism, and other ideologies that grew out of the unique experiences of Europe (and European feudalism, Roman Empire influences, and Christianity).

While there is mythology that the digital age created new “free real estate”, it was never free. All the energy and tangible aspects (not limited to rare earth minerals) of these technologies were built from resource extraction, and it only superficially seemed “free” because the Anthropocentric/Androcentric/etc economic theories deliberately didn’t account for the intrinsic value of anything which wasn’t masculine and human (and, well, European – even if there is a lot of universalism mythology around that as well).

At the time of Europe’s alleged “Age of Discovery”, lands that weren’t already “occupied” (used in a European way) by Christians, or used in a way Europeans believed land should be used, were considered free for the taking. It has been argued that the 17th century papal bulls refining the Doctrine of Discovery and Terra nullius set the state, and this was later refined by Anthropocentric “Enlightenment” philosopher John Locke, who argued that land not actively farmed or improved (manipulated by humans) according to European ideologies was effectively unowned.

I spent decades trying to fight against the expansion of simplistic Lockean property notions being extended into intangibles, such as statutory monopolies: in the 1980s while at high school I wrote an assignment for class arguing against copyright being extended to software, and have been highly critical of software patents and legal protection for “technological measures” (transfer of control of digital technology from technology owners to vendors). Statutory monopolies were not mentioned in Akil Vicks⁠’ articles, but the constant growth of types of government granted monopolies were the basis of much of the tech bubbles and oligarchies we see today.

What false “free real estate” is next?

Once it is obvious that the emperor has no clothes when it comes to the economics of LLMs, and that bubble inevitably bursts, what will be next?

Will Western societies finally give up playing this game when it becomes obvious that allegedly “virtual” “free real estate” is a fantasy?

Will they return to the older version of the game?

• Lands used by non-Christians were considered “incorrect” by Europeans

• Lands not manipulated in a sufficiently Anthropocentric way are considered “incorrect” by Europeans

• Lands governed under non-Westphalian governance where more than one Genos/peoples were allowed self-determination are still considered “incorrect”

• All that needs to happen to free up more tangible “free real estate” is to arbitrarily declare something else to be “incorrect”

I believe we are already seeing this with the so-called “Donroe Doctrine”, although I believe it is incorrect to attribute this policy to an individual. I truly believe that the calls to make the region claimed by the Westphalian governments of Canada, as well as other Westphalian governments that have land claims in this hemisphere, to become part of the “United States of America”, isn’t idle talk.

Is Capitalism the correct term?

In my observation, the term “Capitalism” has become a catch-all for things which people are observing are failing. I remain concerned that much of what we are talking about has nothing to do with whether the alleged “means of production” (regularly given a very narrow European, Anthropocentric, Androcentric, etc meaning) is in the hands of private owners vs collective/public ownership.

If who controls the “means of production” changes, will it change any of the other ideologies?

In conversations I have had with self-identified “Socialists” and “Marxists” (most, not all), I get the feeling that some of these ideologies (such as Anthropocentrism, leading to far more problems than Anthropogenic Climate Change) may even get worse as there would be a larger population expecting an unsustainable individualized “standard of living”.

Public executions were carried out by only two countries in 2025: Iran and Afghanistan. Nazi Germany, it should be noted, was also a fan of public executions. One day the term ‘Magas’ will be used in the same manner as the movement that inspires them.

This is the same day that the UN proclaimed in 1992 the annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

I notice that the mainstream Western media and most commentators are trying to fixate on individuals. They are looking at individuals like Trump, Netanyahu, Putin and others as if they were anomalies -- rather than appropriate mascots for the systems/policies/institutions that created them.

I see more and more stories from State Media like the CBC talking about Netanyahu, as part of the inevitable whitewashing of the centuries-long Anglo Protestant project to colonize Palestine.

US Thanksgiving is coming up on Nov 26, 2026, a celebration of the first group of Anglo Christian Protestants who were calling for the colonization of Palestine. The Pilgrims in 1620 reached what they called the “New World” — which they thought of as a place to build a “New Israel”.

The 1621 Harvest Feast (What US loyalists call their “First Thanksgiving”) is a celebration of the generosity of the pre-existing nationalities on the land, but how these Anglo Protestants responded to that generosity should always have been recognized as anti-civilized.

Few learn any real lessons during US Thanksgiving.

Each US president (and candidate allowed by either duopolist corporate party) protecting the modern Westphalian institutions of Israel in Palestine has not been about any individual, and certainly not about “protecting” Jewish peoples. It has been part of the founding identity and values of other Westphalian institutions such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States (collectively referred to internationally as CANZUS).

As much as the USA claims to believe in the “Rule of Law”, and promotes themselves as if they were the police force of the world, the White grievances formed between the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and the Quebec Act of 1774 were all about elites and supremacists rejecting the rule of law (especially those limiting what today is known as Genocide). They initiated a civil war in 1775 to express those grievances, which led to their Sovereign Citizen (SovCits) style Declaration of Independence in 1776.

That there is periodically yet another set of grievances causing these institutions to make their opposition to the “rule of law” more visible should not surprise anyone.

The cold war being launched by Western European Empires and their ongoing CANZUS colonies against a WW1 and WW2 ally, largely for not adopting the same Eurocentric economic system as Western Europe (which Western Europe+CANZUS wanted to export globally), kept people like Putin in power and put people like Netanyahu in power.

The Balfour Declaration (2 November 1917), and Westphalian state-building models more broadly, put a target on Ashkenazi Jews living in Europe that inevitably led to the Shoah.

There really is nothing interesting or unique about these individuals, or what they are doing today. They only serve as a distraction against changing the underlying identity, values, cultures, and systems of the most rogue Westphalian institutions. In my mind we need to be looking strongly at the founding identity and values of the 5 UN members that participate with the Western Europe and Other Group (WEOG) that share no border with any part of Western Europe: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States, Israel. These are all Western European style governments occupying lands on other continents, and have no real connection with their geographic relations (within those lands within Indigenous nationalities, or with neighbouring lands).

However,

I suspect David Graham will be correct. One day the term ‘Magas’ will be used in the same manner as the “Nazi” movement that inspires them. The term “Nazi” has been used since WW2 for every belligerent to point away from themselves to some “other” they have declared gone, avoiding any exploration of the underlying systems and ideologies that made WW2 – as well as the Shoah – inevitable due to activities carried out by “Allies” as part of WW1 and its aftermath.

Some individuals will be blamed and/or die, and the systemic cycles will continue…

I’m not interested in the ongoing mainstream debates focused around the ideologies and personalities of Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, John Locke, or Adam Smith.

I’m not here to debate or change your mind.

I participate in social media to find Worldview kin. There are many of us out there with similar worldviews, but mainstream political discussions (especially within the Anglosphere) dominate and make it hard for us to find each other.

I am a settler Canadian of Scottish, Irish and French descent. While I am of European descent, I (and my recent ancestors for a few generations) have never lived in Europe.

I was Assigned Canadian At Birth (also Assigned Male At Birth), and while I retain that citizenship for paperwork purposes (in order to not become stateless), the institutions of Canada are not part of my identity.

I was born in Sudbury, and moved to Ottawa when I was 19, and have lived here ever since. This is all within the lands of the Anishinaabe peoples, in the Great Lakes region of what some call North America.

While the institutions of Canada are Eurocentric, that does not require that I be Eurocentric.

Given the lands that have sustained me, as I learned about worldviews and compared to my own views, I figured out that I am a decolonial thinker who has many aspects of my worldviews that more closely match those of domestic nationalities than the settler-colonial worldviews of the institutions of Canada.

I mentioned some of the most common European (primarily Western) thinkers who dominate Eurocentric debates.

I see all of these as thinkers narrowly within specific ideologies that are not part of my worldviews: Enlightenment Thinking (a narrow response to Eurocentric feudalism, not something universal), Anthropocentrism (Human-Centred), Androcentrism (Male-Centred), Individualism/Universalism (One Truth for All, applied at the individual or species level).

If you find any of the above offensive, then just skip this blog (or me as an author generally), as you will likely not like what I have to share. You don’t have to agree with me, and I welcome open discussion, but if your goal is to prove someone “wrong” simply for not being within the same worldviews, then do that on your own blog/etc.

This article sits in the context of many others that Jaime Hoerricks, PhD, discusses the architectural differences that can be found between some Autistic people and what normative Anglosphere (my words, not theirs) culture considers to be “normal”.

Throughout my life I had people indicating how I seemed to be slow to respond, but that they seemed to like my responses once I gave them. I had colleagues that would tell other colleagues not to take any quick answer I might have given as a final answer, and that if they allowed me time to think my default of “not possible” response would become possible with some very outside the “norm” solution.

I did have to constantly tell people that what might seem to them to be a 2 minute “quick question” could actually cost me a half an hour or more time to re-load context after the interruption. I have lost entire afternoons of productive time due to what someone else alleged/believed was a “quick” question.

I’m retired now.

The most recent “event” was last Tuesday, with a doctor’s appointment for my mother-in-law. To ensure that medical information gets adequately relayed, I attend appointments with my aging in-laws.

It is not a doctor I would pick, but this person seems to work for her. She needs to be comforted, and is more interested in being told she is a “good girl” than getting medical details and moving forward with medical follow-ups. Unlike the 3 nerds in her family (her husband is a retired Research Scientist from Health Canada, Science/Biology teacher daughter, and full-stack soldering-irons-to-software IT son-in-law), she is ruled by emotions and social cohesion (What will “They” think), rather than science or logic.

We arrived at the appointment a half hour early, in case we could get in earlier.

While waiting in the main waiting room, there was regularly some device that would make long squealing noises. It wasn’t constant, but on-and-off, possibly relating to some specific procedure. During that time I was able to wear my noise-cancelling headphones, and to even try to distract myself by reading unrelated articles online.

At around the correct time of the appointment we are moving into an examination room, but then it isn’t until more than an hour and a half later that the doctor comes in and stays.

Once in the examination room, I loaded the context of trying to keep the conversation related to medical things, and I kept that active in my mind. My mother-in-law is really into smalltalk (not the programming language) and regularly distracts the conversation and distracts herself, and then forgets to communicate medical information.

I couldn’t distract myself with reading things as I had in the main waiting room, and because the doctor kept walking by I didn’t have my noise-cancelling headphones on.

Since my Lyme disease I hear/see some fluorescent lighting differently than I did before. Apparently my brain was masking these things before without me knowing. I’m surprised with the price of LEDs going down so much (and the longer-term energy savings) that older mercury-containing flourescent lighting hasn’t been replaced yet (especially in medical environments).

That hour and a half wait in the examination room was increasingly painful. I was “on alert” for the appointment, context fully loaded and unable to unload or rest.

There were in-and-out with the doctor saying soon, and even when he did come in and sit down there was a considerable amount of typing that couldn’t have had anything to do with my mother-in-law as she hadn’t said anything medical yet. My guess is that he was filling in notes on the computer for his previous patient.

When the doctor came in and while he was typing, there was smalltalk. Did I hear that some person died in an automobile incident (some region of Ottawa mentined — it didn’t register)? I tried to ask if this had been a patient, etc – but no, this was allegedly “news”. Nop – I’m aware of ongoing genocides that the Canadian government is complicit in, but I’ve learned that talking about what I consider to be relevant and real things is off-topic while in public. I had to aggressively push all that into the background, and keep my mother-in-law’s medical situation in the foreground.

A+B+C+D+E+F+G+H? Where am I again?

The painful appointment was nearly over, and then my mother-in-law jarringly switched the conversation to paperwork because she wants an “Accessible Parking Permit”. She hasn’t driven or had a drivers license for decades, but wanted it for convenience when she travels with elderly friends (who could get the permit themselves, if they spent the time). This requires that she does paperwork, and the doctor signs it, but she wants the doctor to do the whole thing. She has been told that the doctor doesn’t do that, but still regularly distracts the conversation with that.

Then AFTER the doctor leaves, she starts talking about needing copies of her blood work results. Her eyesight is such that she can’t read, and any legitimate doctor has access to her medical information via a database shared within the Ontario medical system. She seems to treat it as some ‘report card’ indicating that she passed something, but then files it in bags of random papers that are then in the way of finding papers she needs.

At that point I said I needed to leave. When she said she “needed” these things and was staying to get them, I loudly yelled “I DON’T CARE” and left the office to wait at the entrance way (past all waiting rooms) until she was done. I had lost all spoons at that point.

She didn’t get a copy of the blood work results, only a second copy of blood requisition she already had to do before a future appointment. Of course, she couldn’t tell the difference so it wasn’t time that mattered or that I needed to participate in.

I don’t write this for sympathy, or for someone to write about how horrible a person I am to yell at an elder, but to share the reality some of us live with.

My mother-in-law already feels like the 3 of us gang up on her, because we regularly don’t understand what she is saying/doing (or why). That isn’t a new thing with aging (She is 30 years plus a few days older than me – easy to remember her birthday when filling in forms), but a neurotype incompatibility from decades before I understood what a neurotype was. I already feel bad about all of that, and how she feels that the family loves my father-in-law more than we love her (umm – like siblings? I don’t emotionally understand this type of comparison between parents about their adult children).

I don’t have these issues with my own medical appointments, or going to medical appointments with my father-in-law (30 years minus a few days older than my wife) as the doctors stay on-topic, and don’t bring us into examination rooms until it is actually time for the examination.

It isn’t like I can talk with my in-laws to discuss my situation. They were born in pre-partition India, still under direct British occupation and before the multi-generational decolonization project was initiated. The British are well-known for dismissing the entire concept of mental health with their notions around having a “stiff upper lip”. The Anglosphere has been behind research relating to neurotypes, and still pathologizes difference. This is an aspect of myself that will never be understood by my family, even if I had fully understood and shared it when I was younger.

These are two events that have ended up merged, but it is useful to know how they have distinct origin stories

• National Day for Truth and Reconciliation pronounced by the Government of Canada (Bill C-5, 2021) as the federal government response to Call to Action 80 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC)

Call to Action 80 reads:

We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

I am willing to discuss if there are actual questions, to help take any load off of survivors or other targeted populations.

But please don’t engage if you are confused about the different concepts of homicide (individual vs individual, even if more than one individual involved) and genocide (against a peoples/genos). Whether intended or not (ignorance is deliberate or not), you likely will be engaging in genocide denialism if you don’t understand the difference. Please understand that difference first before trying to understand any specific set of genocidal policies.

There is a specific variation of genocide denialism asking for a specific accounting of individual humans bodies (as if this related to a criminal investigation by the police against an individual) that makes absolutely no sense in the context of genocide (where police forces aren’t collecting evidence of crimes, but tasked by the government to help carry out the crimes. This includes, but is not limited to, the specific well documented genocidal policies of Residential Schools).

This article will start with my words, but end with a related chat with Gemini.

In the 2020s I did a deep-dive on anti-racism, which led me to anti-colonialism, and a different understanding of the society I grew up in. This is specifically the Dominion of Canada institutions within the Great Lakes region in the south-of-49th parallel region of the province of Ontario that was named after Lake Ontario in 1867 (The term “Ontario” is most commonly linked to the Wendat word ontarí:io or various Haudenosaunee languages using the word kanadario—meaning “great lake,” “beautiful lake,” or “sparkling water”).

Throughout my life, I observed that other people found my questions interesting. I would ask questions about things they took for granted. Some people found that fascinating, and other people found it annoying – some even got angry as they incorrectly guessed the motivation of being argumentative.

As part of the Indigenous Studies I came across the concept of “worldviews”, and that opened up for me to finally understand how it is that I saw the world entirely differently than the mainstream society around me.

Why talk about “Western” worldviews so much?

The dominant worldview in the society I live under is considered “Western”, as the Dominion of Canada was formed under settler-colonialism with a specific French Empire, Dutch Empire, and British Empire history.

As I have a more relational way of thinking, it is quite logical for me to discuss how I exist in relation to specific worldviews:

• Given I live under the institutions of Canada, Western European settler-colonial (French, Dutch, British), I have a relation to those institutions and their identity, values, culture and worldviews.

• Given my ancestry, Scottish, Irish and French worldviews.

• Given where I live, worldviews of nationalities domestic (Indigenous, given relationship to colonialism) to this region such as the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and various unaligned nations.

• Given who I married, worldviews from South Asia – specifically Hinduism.

A Worldview logical fallacy

I regularly run into this problem, so I want to address it here.

Likely a majority within the West grant “honour by association” to ideologies that are associated with the West. There is then a false-binary applied that claims that those who do not grant that “honour by association” must be instead granting it “guilt by association”.

In their minds, someone needs to be either “for” or “against” something, as opposed to simply not caring about that specific thing.

Whether an ideology is or is not “Western” didn’t matter to me, as that was not part of my own identity even if it is part of the identity of the institutions of Canada.

I did not go on a journey intending to disagree with ideologies that are regularly grouped within Western European “Enlightenment” or Western European “Liberalism”. I didn’t even know what “Enlightenment” was, or an accurate idea of what “Liberalism” was, when I started to notice patterns.

I did deep dives into problems I perceived. I didn’t superficially stop at economic systems like “Capitalism” or “Socialism”, but go further to where those ideas came from (and if the problems I notice are in any relevant way different in those economic ideas), as well as the ideological context of these systems.

I came to a series of ideologies I didn’t agree with (Anthropocentrism and thus Anthropocentric notions of property, Androcentrism, Individualism, Universalism, linear time and the myth of progress, etc), and still wondered why the society I lived in was stuck in these (IMO foreign and outdated) ideologies.

Ahh — worldviews attached to personal identity, and “honour by association” granted by people within certain worldviews for any ideology that is associated with “their” worldviews.

Today’s set of questions were observed in other chats on Substack. While I know the theory behind Western European “universalism” which can help us to seek out universal truths, in reality within specific cultures (including the mainstream Western culture that Canada exists within) pre-existing social hierarchies ended up meaning that it was taken as some axiom that every other culture is pretty much the same as Western culture (and anything different is pathologized).

I regularly see this with those who subscribe to specific ideologies common within Western cultures discussing Capitalism vs Socialism/Marxism/Communism. They will take these discussions out of the context of everything else (dismiss all other variables, incorrectly believing they are extraneous), and believe that the “conclusions” they have come to are somehow “objective” or “universal”.

What their discussions expose is actually how deeply they treat specific ideologies as axioms, with their discussions not actually exposing much about the topics they believe they are discussing.

Given Korea regularly comes up in these conversations, and I am a fan of K-drama from South Korea (Rina and I just watched Teach You A Lesson), I wanted to post Gemini’s answers to some quick questions.

Situatedness: I’m a cis-hetero male of Irish, Scottish and French descent (Meaning, by contemporary subjective definitions of the social construct of race that imposes a social hierarchy, I’m White.) I’m Autistic (formally assessed), and a Gestalt thinker (self-assessed).

There is an enhancement to the article by Neurodivergent Rebel that I would like to make.

In an individualistic, androcentric and misogynistic culture, it isn’t only women that are the target. When the target is an individual, it is any individual who is not considered a “real man”.

While this obviously includes women, it also includes LGBTQIA2S+, and goes all the way to targeting cis-hetero males that aren’t considered “man enough” (such as myself, who isn’t competitive, doesn’t like sports or cars, doesn’t drive, etc).

Unlike how things are presented under Western European “Enlightenment” individualism and universalism, this isn’t merely some bad apples. The manosphere is like a funhouse mirror that amplifies an aspect of this society to make it more visible, but it is a problem within the core identity, values, and culture of this society. I see it throughout the Anglosphere (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States, United Kingdom), and not merely in the one specific more visible, open and honest sub-community of the manosphere, and not only within one country.

The claim that Autism, ADHD, and so much more only apply to “White Males”, and that real “White Males” are the only deserving demographic deserving, isn’t unique to the manosphere.

It is a flaw within this society (Anglosphere) that has needed REAL correction for a very long time, and not merely performative hyper-individualistic finger pointing. As part of post-WW2 Allied marketing there is a claim that Eugenics was a German thing, when in fact all the Germans did was be inspired by Anglosphere (Primarily UK, Canada, USA) ideologies and engineer an efficient implementation plan. Because the Anglosphere hasn’t sufficiently lost a war, it has never been forced into any true Truth and Reconciliation process ), and the underlying ideologies have never been eradicated. (Note: Canada’s TRC process for “Indian Residential Schools” has been largely performative, focused on one genocidal policy, and the harm is ongoing.)

In a hyper-competitive androcentric society, scarcity will always be manufactured in order to impose the hierarchy, so they are technically correct that any “not real men” receiving support means that their top position in the hierarchy is, in their mind, being undervalued. It is yet another form of aggrieved entitlement.

From the perspective of these ideologies, gender roles are a binary: Either you are a “real man”, or you are a tradwife (a married woman who willingly embraces conventional Anglosphere gender roles). Everything else is treated as a disease that must be cured. I do note that while conversion therapy is outlawed for some “invisible diversities”, adjacent therapy such as ABA is still the most common “therapy” for Autistic people.

This user had an “interesting” note in their own activity feed that I want to write something about in the future.

I have no personal interest in “destroying” anything, and do not think that a society advancing beyond specific ideologies is somehow “destruction”. Was the launch of the so-called “Age of Enlightenment” an example of destruction?

I don’t subscribe to the concept of linear time or the related myth of progress, and instead think more in terms of cyclical time as perceived by many other groups.

The current focus of my lifelong learning, because of where I have always lived and what family I married into, is on pre-existing (Indigenous) nationalities near the Great Lakes region (and this northern continent generally), and Bengali (and South Asian and Asia-Pacific generally). These groups also don’t subscribe to linear time or the myth of progress.

Side-note: “America” is what Europeans named — after one of their own: Italian Amerigo Vespucci — . This isn’t only a references to the “United States of America”, and obviously also applies to Canada which is another Western European Westphalian government claiming jurisdiction over land that shares no border with any part of Western Europe.

That all said, I have noticed many loyalists to contemporary ideologies often associated with “The West” (primary loyalists to members of the United Nations “Western Europe and Other Group”) would agree with Grok that these are the “core foundations” of what they consider to be “Western civilization”. I have observed that loyalists (whether they self-identify as conservative or liberal, right or left) feel very emotional (anger, etc) whenever there are any discussion of these ideologies rather than treating them as axioms equated to “the best”.

“The West is the Best” has become so strongly faith based that some people feel that their identity or even their very existence is challenged by scientific inquiry into these ideologies.

I’m a settler Canadian of Scottish, Irish and French (New France era) descent who was born in Sudbury and currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario. I have lived on the lands of the Anishinaabe peoples my entire life.

The most simple economic analysis shows that it makes absolutely no sense for Canadian citizens, so the purpose must be something else entirely. It feels like an attempt to appease economic and political elites that formed around the resource extraction entity known as Alberta that the Federal Government in Ottawa created in 1905 with Alberta Act 1905.

I know there is an unlawful referendum being pushed forward for that corporation to separate from Canada and retain land claims, but it is past time for the Dominion of Canada institutions to put the notion that these subsidiaries can separate without FPIC from the indigenous nations (treaty or not, Canada has obligations). While international law protects the rights of Indigenous nations to separate from Provincial crowns, there is no method other than violent revolution, force, or an unconstitutional Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) for a province to do this.

Rather than trying to appease these economic and political elites, whether in Alberta, Saskatchewan or Quebec, through projects that oppose the National Interest, the Dominion of Canada government should move forward with processes to defang special interests.

It is obvious to me that the creation of new provinces, and the extension of existing provinces, into the North West Territories was a policy similar to “gerrymandering” to grant distant southern settler capitals control over northern lands. With the direct involvement of treaty nations for the numbered treaties, to redraw the boundaries of these “Provinces”.

When I was born in Sudbury in 1968, I was told I lived in Northern Ontario. My growing pattern

While my body was born in 1968, my “birth” as a confirmed Autistic person was in 2024.

There were signs throughout my life of Autism, but they were ignored. I dutifully translated my thoughts into the prescribed format, trimming most of the connections my brain would make to a lossy (inaccurate) flattened transmission protocol. I assumed that what I was taught about “human nature” was true and that all humans were doing the same thing, only some people were faster at that compression than I was.

After spending a decade deeply involved in technology law in the early 2000s, I became pessimistic and politically resigned in the 2010s, thinking there was no way to move forward on any of the problems I saw because “humanity” was stuck within a mindset that disallowed observing and moving out of specific patterns.

There was a liberating feeling in the 2020s as I allowed myself to notice larger patterns in the social structures I lived within, and recognized that the problems I observed were not universal across humanity – but narrowly within specific mindsets that are promoted within specific cultures. As a lifelong learning “Open Source” type person I wanted to share. The sharing regularly went poorly.

When I received confirmation in 2024 that I was Autistic, after finally learning what an Autistic Mask was in 2022, I then thought it would be appropriate for me to unmask: to be who I always was, and become happy with who I am.

Adjustments are needed

While there are some people who I can communicate with less loss than others, I need to remember that while I may have changed, nothing else did. If my communication is to have any meaning to another individual, or to a more public audience, it needs to be translated to their way of thinking (or the mainstream Canadian/Anglosphere/Western way of communicating) and not expressed directly in the way my mind works.

As I circle around the issue in other articles, I’m getting closer to accepting my need to adjust. In these articles, I thought about a purpose being to send out a “signal flare” to try to find other like-minded people.

Even though I have said that a few times, I still hit “reply” to other people who have expressed a very different way of thinking and have tried to create a thread to expand to the larger gestalt.

This is not received well.

I need to recognize that this should not surprise me as much as it does. As much as I am uncomfortable with having to be inaccurate and compress thoughts to communicate, other people won’t like having their ideas ripped out of their context and brought into a gestalt.

What does that have to do with “Why Adult GLPs Write So Differently”?

Before and during my career, I often had people who thanked me for being able to help them understand technology. I didn’t act like the IT priesthood who felt best when they had knowledge that nobody else had; instead, I went out of my way to translate so that everyone could understand at their level of comfort.

Without knowing what I was doing, I became great at that translation.

I could picture the interaction between Jaime Hoerricks and Jenn McRae happening with a younger version of myself, and readers thinking I was an analytic processor. I would have assumed the correctness of that language, as that is what I thought I was doing when I broke big thoughts into smaller thoughts to make progress in smaller steps.

What I didn’t realize is that other people were actually starting with the small pieces and incrementally building up the larger.

When I generate small, digestible steps, it isn’t because I started there, and that distinction matters.

The change I need to make

For me, the energy isn’t in building the large from the small, but separating the small out from the large. One of the things I did well in my career was to recognize there were finite resources, and to always factor in resource management. It is not possible with finite resources to do everything, and thus if someone presumes that everything is a priority then that means that nothing is a priority. I regularly had to convince managers to pick which of the projects they believed was a “priority” that they were willing to let fail (or best, not be allocated resources at all), otherwise failure would happen in an unmanaged way.

I am regularly inspired by what other people write. The change I need to make is that if I don’t have the resources to translate my inspiration into a more understandable format, I need to not hit “reply”. Just because I was excited by what was said (or written), doesn’t mean I have to interact if at that moment I lack the energy to translate communication to something decipherable by other people. If I interact without the energy, I will only generate negativity such as arguments, defensiveness, etc.

I felt this article deeply, as I felt a deep resignation in the 2010s.

However, responding by sharing how I feel now would have been a mistake. From what I learned prior to the 2010s, I no longer see Canadian parliaments the way I did previously. I see the fixation on political parties and corporate market share (what people are talking about when they talk about “party popular vote”) not as an example of resistance, but as itself a form of resignation or acceptance of the status quo.

I was extremely excited by this article: It articulated a pattern I have observed for a long time, of how Canada has cycled between seeing the USA as its greatest friend and ally, to recognizing it as its greatest threat (threat to the institutions of Canada, as well as global bully threat to the rest of the world).

While this specific story started the same year I was born, in 1968, I saw the pattern as existing for far longer than my lifetime, even longer than the USA or Canada have existed as internationally recognized governments.

1968 was also the year that P.E. Trudeau was elected for the first time. For some people, this article will set off thinking of policies during the terms of a series of Canadian Federal Prime Ministers: Trudeau Sr., Mulroney, Chrétien, Martin, Harper, Trudeau Jr., and now Carney. Maybe they will remember Turner, Clark and Campbell, but often with their short terms they get forgotten. They may even divide these into Progressive Conservative, Conservative vs Liberal governments, suggesting that “Conservatives” were closer to the USA and “Liberals” saw something “truthful”.

I don’t see this. When I became more mainstream politically active in the 1990s it was in opposition to Chrétien Liberal and Clinton Democrat policies. For a period of time I thought that this means I might be “Conservative”, and it took until experiences during the mid 2000s to finally move beyond the logical fallacy of the false binary of believing that if you dislike the policies of “Liberals” (Democrats, New or classic) or “Conservatives” (Republicans, Progressive Conservatives, Bloc, Reform), then you must be “for” the other one.

So… with all that in my head, I replied to someone making note of the compatibility between Canadian PM Mulroney and US President Reagan.

This was going to be a small comment, but grew as there are many interconnected thoughts that I felt shouldn’t be trimmed so quickly. (And I doubted the idea I had a Gestalt mind…)

The Vedanta Society of Ottawa has a monthly class where Revered Swami Kripamayananda reads and discusses with us specific sections of the Books of Ramakrishna Order.

The group is currently reading from The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda.

I attended yesterday (Thursday), and the class ended with a discussion of the first paragraph of the Introduction to Patanjali’s Yoga Aphorisms.

Given my other recent readings, I recognized this as a critique of Western European linear time and the myth of progress. I see so much overlap in my readings....

When Vivekananda was touring the West in the 1890s, the intellectual landscape was utterly consumed by the “Myth of Progress”. This is all part of the ongoing “Enlightenment” ideologies, something called “Whig history” (a new term for me) which views humanity as moving along a linear timeline from “primitive” to “civilized,” and would keep climbing an infinite, straight ladder of technological and moral advancement.

Just because Western Europe over a short period of its history went through specific steps, does not mean it relates to “humanity” (temporal or spatial). The Western European notion of “universality” is mythology, not science.

In many regions of North America, Indigenous societies (relational sovereign nationalities) strategically adapted their subsistence strategies (alternating between intensive agriculture and hunting-gathering) based on environmental shifts, population density, and resource availability. These dynamic shifts allowed communities to optimize survival without detriment to other relations (land and life), which is very different from Western European ideologies (Anthropocentrism, Androcentrism, Individualism, etc) which blindly believed in a strictly linear path from foraging to farming where humans are somehow disconnected from everything around them (and with the odd notion of individualism, disconnected from each other).

“Whig history” is yet another example of ongoing Western European (AKA: White) Supremacist thinking which taints much of the social, economic, and other theories that came out of (and continue to come out of) Western Europe and its colonial devotees.

Vivekananda was very polite to his Western audiences, allowing the term “modern” to be used when what was being discussed was merely the narrow ideologies forming from within Western Europe.

(Note: I haven’t been reading in order, and read sections on JNĀNA-YOGA first, as I wanted to understand the concept of Māyā)

Vivekananda in other chapters expands on this introduction, and dismantles the entire “linear time” and “myth of progress” framework using two main arguments

1) The Trap of the Infinite Horizon

If the goal is always moving forward, and humanity is on a treadmill of endless “improvement” but never reaches a final destination, then existence is fundamentally a tragedy. It means humanity is trapped in a permanent state of lack. There is no ultimate peace, no final liberation (Moksha), and no absolute truth. All they see is an endless administrative grind toward a horizon that keeps receding.

2) The Law of Cycles (Samsara vs. Linear Time)

To counter the Western European notion of linear time, Vivekananda introduces the ancient South Asian cosmology of cyclical time.

In physics and in metaphysics, motion requires a starting point and a return. A straight line projected into infinity is an abstraction; in reality, everything in the universe moves in cycles.

• The Macrocosm: Stars are born, collapse, and their dust forms new stars. Empires rise, decay, and fall. The universe itself undergoes creation (Srishti), preservation (Sthiti), and dissolution (Pralaya).

• The Microcosm: A breath goes out and must come back in. A wave rises from the ocean and must crash back into it.

Within my anti-racism learning, I began to ask of “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)” programs: inclusion into what?

Is this an environment that allows any “meat sack”, regardless of its visible attributes, to be included as long as everything else that makes someone human is left outside in order to conform? Since I started to think about this in 2021, I have come across the term “Boutique Multiculturalism” which is very related to this concept.

When I read the line “This statement, though apparently very nice, is also absurd”, I asked myself: nice for who? It appears to me the answer is that it is nice and convenient for the administrative Westphalian state and the political and economic elites that benefit from having a largely subservient workforce for their hyper-hierarchical social machinery.

To be clear, I’m not only seeing this as a critique of Capitalism but also the narrow critiques we can see within Socialism, Marxism/Communism, etc, that grew out of the same Western European “Enlightenment” worldviews. I know whenever there is discussion of “elites” there is a tendency for a debate between “your elites” and “my elites” between loyalists to Western European Conservatism vs Liberalism. I see the problem as the social hierarchies themselves, not which specific Western European ideologies are being forced on populations by which elites.
